Bountiful Gardens

This is the time of year that we love. All the hard work you have put into your vegetable garden comes to fruition. Lovely tomatoes, zucchinis and beans ready for harvest.

plenty of squash! However do you find that your neighbours are avoiding you for fear of having to take even more of the extra vegetables that you are picking every day? We have an excellent idea for you, donate some of your surplus harvest to the Kawartha Lakes Food Source. We will give those healthy vegetables to people who can't afford to buy healthy vegetables and fruit because of the cost. And your neighbours will stop avoiding you.

If you have a fruit tree that is over loaded with fruit that you dread having to pick, give us a call and we can take it off your hands.

You can only eat so much zuchinniThere are a few initiatives that have been started in cities around the country, and perhaps next year we could see them grow here in the Kawartha Lakes. One of them is called Sharing Backyards. In this scenario, if you have a garden available but can't work it yourself, you put your name on this site and invite someone who would like a plot of land to plant vegetables, but lives somewhere without a garden, you make arrangements to share the land. The grower plants the garden, the owner gives the land, and they share the harvest. The KLFS could benefit by getting a portion of the excess.

ApplesThe other initiative is called Not Far from the Tree. This is something that we could set up in the Kawartha Lakes. If you have a fruit tree that regularly gives far more fruit than you or your willing neighbours could ever eat, an idea would be that we set up teams that are willing to pick the fruit and distribute it.

These ideas, along with Grow a Row, Plant a Row, are all fairly easy ways to contribute to the Food Source and share your garden's bounty.
